NIDA-MODIFIED ASSIST

The freely-available NIDA-Modified ASSIST (NM ASSIST; NIDA, 2012) may help counselors explore a client’s use of alcohol, tobacco, and prescription and illegal drugs. Eight questions assess the client’s use, desire to use, and negative ramifications of use for a variety of target substances (e.g., cocaine, inhalants, hallucinogens). Ranging from lower risk to high risk, counselors tally a Substance Involvement Score that not only helps guide them as they make diagnostic determinations and develop treatment plans, it also enhances the client’s insight and understanding of their own individual risk factors.
